New Central Library
Collaborated with the renowned architecture firm HKS, this design tender is to convert the old Macau courthouse and the old police headquarter building into a new central library. The courthouse is a cultural heritage building of which the building is to be kept in its entirety. The police headquarter building has a classical facade design which is also be kept untouched. The challenge falls in the vertical expansion that cantilevers over the existing buildings, in order to achieve the required square footage to accommodate all the new library functions. The team has come up with a design that borrows from the Portuguese colonial heritage elements of Macau and “marries” it to the existing classical facade of the courthouse and police headquarter.
